Senior Care Middletown, NJ: Effective Ways to Reduce Dust
Senior Care Middletown, NJ: Effective Ways to Reduce Dust

Over the winter, dust builds up. Windows are shut and heating systems run. The drier area and lack of air movement can trap dust and pet dander. Before allergy season hits as trees and flowers start to leaf and bloom, get the dust under control. These are the most effective ways to do so.

Change Air Filters

If you have a furnace, you need to change the air filters regularly. In most cases, you’re looking at replacing them at least once a year if they are five-inch filters, twice a year if they are four-inch filters, and four times a year if they are one or two-inch filters.

If you see the filter is dirty, change it. It doesn’t matter if it hasn’t been long enough since the last filter change. Once it’s dirty, you need to clean it.

Purchase an Air Purifier

An air purifier can help remove some of the dust and spores from the home. Make sure you purchase a unit that is designed for the room size you’re cleaning. If possible, get a model that offers ionic and UV purification as that will kill bacteria and trap more of the tiny dust particles.

Shampoo Carpets and Upholstery

Shampoo all carpeting and upholstery to remove. To do this, vacuum them thoroughly first. Next, run the shampooer over them to steam clean and remove trapped dirt and dust. Run fans to dry them thoroughly.

Dust Furnishings

Dust all tables, chairs, handrails, TVs, and other furnishings. Use dusters that are designed to trap dust rather than spread it around. You can also use a damp cloth if the dust is particularly thick. Once you’ve dusted all the furnishings, you can go over them with some wood-safe wax spray to help condition the wood.

Wash Bedding, Curtains, and Pet Beds

Wash all of the bedding that’s gathered dust during the winter months. It may be advisable to go to a laundromat and use a heavy-duty washer that’s designed for bulky blankets, curtains, and comforters. Make sure items don’t require dry cleaning. Add vinegar to the wash cycle to kill any germs and remove odors.

Allergies are no fun. They’re exhausting and can cause more serious health issues like asthma. If your mom or dad deal with seasonal allergies, you can help them feel better by arranging to have senior care aides help them.

You can hire senior care services like meal preparation, housekeeping, and transportation. Caregivers can tell them when it’s safe to take another dose of their allergy medication. Senior care can also help with appointment scheduling, prescription refills, and shopping. Learn more by making a call.
