If your elderly loved one is experiencing memory loss, you may be concerned that they have dementia. However, that may not be the case. There are many things that could be causing your elderly loved one to experience memory loss. Learning more about these causes can give the information you need to help your elderly loved one reverse their memory loss.

Depression

Depression can cause some levels of memory loss. For most people who suffer from depression, they have a hard to remembering things, staying organized, concentrating, and doing daily tasks. Your elderly loved one could be depressed for a number of reasons. Some of these reasons include recently getting diagnosed with a serious health condition, losing their spouse or another loved one, retiring, and much more. If you think that your elderly loved one might be depressed, talk to them about it. They may need to see their doctor about depression treatments.

Vitamin B12 Deficient

If your elderly loved one is experiencing memory loss, they could be VItamin B12 deficient. This vitamin is important for maintaining healthy brain functions. If your elderly loved one isn’t getting enough Vitamin B12 in their diet, it can lead to some memory loss. If this deficiency is caught early enough, the memory loss that your elderly loved one has experienced could be reversed. If you can’t get your elderly loved one to their doctor quickly enough, you can hire an elderly care provider to do so.

Thyroid Issues

Your elderly loved one may be having memory loss due to thyroid issues. Thyroid glands are responsible for controlling metabolism. If your elderly loved one’s metabolism is too high, they may get confused. If it isn’t functioning quickly enough, they can get depressed or sluggish, which can also cause memory loss. If your elderly loved one is forgetting things or having trouble concentrating, they may have thyroid issues. This is something that they can have assessed by their doctor. If this is the case, the doctor can prescribe medications to help.

Abusing Alcohol

Has your elderly loved one been abusing alcohol? If so, this can cause toxicity to their brain cells. Over time, alcohol abuse could cause memory loss. If your elderly loved one is abusing alcohol, the sooner they stop drinking, the sooner they may be able to reverse the memory loss. However, in some cases, this type of memory loss may be irreversible.

Being Dehydrated

If your elderly loved one is dehydrated, this could also cause memory loss. People who are moderate to severely dehydrated often become confused. They may have memory loss that mimics dementia. If your elderly loved one is experiencing memory loss, have them drink at least 6 to 8 glasses of water every day to see if that helps improve their memory.

These are some of the things that may cause reversible memory loss. If your elderly loved one starts experiencing memory loss, be sure you get to the bottom of it as soon as possible.
